The Things We Become
Discover your destiny as you join the mutant hunters that have sworn to protect humanity.
Best played as a campaign of several 2-4 hour sessions.
Collaborative storytelling for 2–6 players
Requires no GM, with d12s rolled to resolve risky actions
Perfect for people who want deep character-creation and advancement with a focus on story
This 74-page game puts you in the role of hunters, humanity’s last protectors, in a verdant apocalypse where nature has taken back control of the earth. You’ll explore the shroud, a sprawling forest of mutations, poisons, and strange beasts that your village must fight against to survive. As you venture into the shroud you’ll take on mutations yourself, causing your fellow villagers to distrust you. Will you still find belonging among your old friends and family, or turn to the tradition-focused hunters lodge as a new home? Or perhaps you’ll find yourself more comfortable in the shroud itself, which is slowly changing you so that you might survive there more easily. What will you make of your dwindling humanity? Will you learn from the hunters that came before you or create a new future for your village?
The Things We Become is a full-fledged original rule system, with skills, talents, and mutations that will help you create a hunter that’s uniquely yours. You’ll play through four strange seasons each year, moving through the shroud’s bizarre cycles of life and death and watching your village grow and change. It’s a game about what it is to be human, how we find belonging, and the darker side of the natural world around us.

After a few sessions, the city will alight in the memorable Night of Fire, and afterwards you’ll play to find out how the city recovers and who wrests control.
